This is a really thoughtful analysis and so well articulated--as usual.🙂 Thanks for an interesting insightful read.

Nice post. As Tolkien said in The Return of the King, p. 190, "It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till. What weather they shall have is not ours to rule."

Interestingly, Mark Hamill completely disagreed with the direction that was written for his character: "I said to Rian, I said, Jedis don't give up. I mean even if he [Luke] had a problem he would maybe take a year to try and regroup," said Hamill. "If he made a mistake, he would try and right that wrong. So, right there we had a fundamental difference. But, it's not my story anymore. It's somebody else's story [Rey's], and Rian needed me to be a certain way to make the ending effective."

"Luke would never say that. I'm sorry," Hamill continued. "I'm talking about the George Lucas 'Star Wars.' This is the next generation of 'Star Wars.' I almost had to think of Luke as another character. Maybe he's Jake Skywalker. He's not my Luke Skywalker. But I had to do what Rian wanted me to do because it serves the story well. Listen, I still haven't accepted it completely, but it's only a movie. I hope people like it. I hope they don't get upset."

"I pretty much fundamentally disagree with every choice you’ve made for this character," said Hamill. "Now, having said that, I have gotten it off my chest, and my job now is to take what you’ve created and do my best to realize your vision."
